UPD June 2023. The article was written in 2013 and turned out to be very prophetic. Recommendation from 2023 - don’t bother with V-Ray and 3ds Max, that's why. The following is the original text of the article from 2013.

The Internet is oversaturated with offers of courses on setting up VRay; they talk about them in detail for 2-3 days. This was done in order to generate additional profit. I basically don’t bother novice designers with these settings for 3 reasons:

1) Algorithms are changing. Over time, computers become more powerful, optimization algorithms change, and V-Ray, accordingly, also changes. If you were able to configure it 1-2 years ago, this does not mean at all that you can do it now. At the moment, the trend includes PathTrace Unbiased GPU renders. PathTrace is a physically correct visualization algorithm based on the real properties of light, does not require configuration, is simple and extremely photorealistic. With its help you can achieve photorealism that cannot be achieved using V-Ray. It can also be run on a graphics card, which speeds up rendering by 20-100 times.

Below you will see some videos showing it working in real time! Those. It takes not several hours, but several seconds to visualize one frame to acceptable quality!
